Older houses, more crawlspaces
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020–2024 estimates) counts about 12,170 housing units in Thomasville. Roughly 5,700 were built before 1980, and about 3,150 before 1960. That's close to half the city's housing, a higher share than in High Point.
Thomasville homes by decade built

Built before 1980 Newer
Thomasville grew as a furniture town just like High Point, and the neighborhoods around downtown and the Big Chair still have mill-era houses on brick piers. Those crawlspaces stay damp in summer, and older sill plates and floor joists have had decades of exposure. When we inspect an older Thomasville home, we expect to find signs of past termite activity, and we tell you whether it's old or active.
Pests we see most in Thomasville
Termites top the list, in the older crawlspace houses and in additions that were built later without the same protection. Mice and rats are close behind in the fall, slipping in through foundation gaps and worn crawlspace doors. German roaches are a bigger issue here in duplexes, apartments and rentals, where they move between units. Wooded yards and creek edges on the outskirts get mosquitoes from May on.
